Career

Mr. Wang Weidong has been practicing law since 1993, with over 30 years of experience specializing in the power, energy, and infrastructure sectors. His expertise covers cross-border investment and M&A, project financing, domestic and overseas IPOs, foreign investment in China, as well as commercial arbitration and mediation. Mr. Wang has provided comprehensive legal services to numerous major central and state-owned enterprises across China.

With extensive experience in cross-border investment and project development, Mr. Wang has led multiple landmark projects of national strategic importance. His work spans municipal works, roads and bridges, power and energy, mining, renewable energy, water supply, and waste treatment. He has accumulated significant practical experience advising Chinese enterprises on outbound investment, including EPC contracts and large-scale projects in the mining, oil, gas, power, and transportation sectors.

As one of China’s earliest legal experts in BOT and project finance, Mr. Wang has demonstrated outstanding leadership in energy and infrastructure law. He built one of the country’s most recognized legal teams in this field, leading three of the five BOT pilot projects approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. He has long served as core counsel to China Energy Investment Corporation, SPIC, Datang, Huadian, and CGN. In the manufacturing sector, he played a key role in the merger of CSR and CNR to form CRRC Group, and continues to provide strategic legal support to CRRC. In emerging technology, he has advised GCL Group on photovoltaic innovation, whose perovskite tandem module efficiency set a new world record in May 2025.

Mr. Wang is a dual expert in energy and M&A law as well as cross-border investment policy. He has led his team in providing legal services for hundreds of national renewable energy demonstration projects, covering solar, wind, nuclear, hydrogen, hydro, geothermal, and biomass power. His representative projects include:

Shandong Zhonghua Power 3200MW Project – China’s largest Sino-foreign joint venture in the power sector;

Fujian Meizhou Bay 2×350MW Project – China’s first wholly foreign-funded power project;

Laibin B Plant BOT Project – China’s only fully successful lifecycle BOT project.

He also led the first overseas acquisition of a complete rail equipment manufacturer (Vossloh Locomotives) by a Chinese enterprise, and represented the lender consortium in the CNY 19 billion Yamal LNG project financing.

Mr. Wang is deeply engaged in both legal practice and policy development. He serves as Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, providing professional support in fiscal legal affairs. As a member of the International Bar Association (IBA) and board director of the Interlex Group, he actively promotes international cooperation in legal services. Domestically, he is a Council Member of the Chinese Society of International Law and Executive Director of the Lawyer Law Research Association of the China Law Society, contributing to research on the legal profession and the rule of law.

He also serves as Secretary-General of the Strategic Development Committee of the All China Lawyers Association, Council Member and Supervisor of the Beijing Lawyers Association, and PPP Legal Expert in the Ministry of Finance’s expert pool. Mr. Wang frequently advises provincial and municipal governments as a legal and legislative consultant, and is listed among Beijing’s senior legal experts.

In dispute resolution, Mr. Wang serves as an arbitrator with the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), and several regional arbitration commissions, as well as a mediator with the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC). He also contributes to corporate governance and academia as an independent director appointed by the Beijing SASAC, visiting researcher at the Central University of Finance and Economics, and expert committee member of China Business Law Journal and LexisNexis.
