Maria Fehretdinov is an experienced litigator who serves as lead counsel on multi-million dollar complex federal and state litigation disputes. Her practice focuses on actions involving federal, state and local government entities; constitutional and property rights claims; securities and shareholder derivative claims; antitrust litigation; class actions; product liability litigation; and anti-corruption cases and investigations.
Prior to joining the firm, Maria was a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Latham & Watkins LLP. She also served as a law clerk for Judge Stephen H. Glickman in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and worked at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, Office of International Affairs.
Maria has repeatedly secured substantial sums for her clients at trial and via settlement, and she has prevailed on novel cases of first impression in the trial and appellate courts. For instance, she represented an international developer in a suit against the City of Miami in connection with its right to develop and lease a $1.2 billion mixed-used hotel, retail and marina project on Watson Island. After a 7-day bench trial on liability, she obtained a 27-page order finding in favor of the client on every disputed issue; and achieved a settlement allowing the client to recover $20 million, along with development agreements providing tens of millions in economic value. She was also lead counsel in successfully representing an iconic Hospitality management company in a federal suit against the City of Miami alleging constitutional law violations that were issues of first impression. After she assisted with a parallel lawsuit that secured a $63.5 million jury verdict against a City commissioner for the political vendetta predicating the City’s unlawful policies, the City approved a $12.5 million payout (along with non-monetary benefits) to her clients. She also argued before the Third District Court of Appeal to obtain an important victory on an issue of first impression under the Bert J. Harris Private Property Rights Protection Act, which is closely followed by specialists in the property rights arena. In a unanimous opinion, the Court reversed an order granting summary judgment to the City of Miami and upheld the finding that Maria’s client had an existing use in advertising murals. Recently, she was lead counsel representing the owner of a global collection of luxury beach clubs and resorts, in a three-year, high-profile litigation against the City of Miami Beach involving the procurement and bidding of one of the most prominent public projects in the City, an iconic billion-dollar beachfront property. She achieved a $3 million settlement in addition to a 15-month lease on the property, allowing the client to highlight its brand.
