Andrew qualified as solicitor in 1999 and has dedicated his career to ac ting for individuals and protecting human rights and fighting against injustices at the hands of the police. Andrew has a long-standing Band 1 ranking in Chambers for this category. He is also ranked at Band 2 in the Civil Liberties & Human Rights category. He has conducted many successful cases and jury trials against police forces. He has positively represented claimants in two leading police law authorities in The Court of Appeal.

In Copeland v Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis [2015] 3 All ER 391 established important legal principles for the tort of malicious prosecution and the test to be applied in deciding when an officer is a ‘prosecutor’.

His case of Zenati v Crown Prosecution Service and Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis [2015] 1 All ER 124 established that the police and the Crown Prosecution Service have a duty under Article 5 European Convention on Human Rights to act with special diligence in bringing exculpatory evidence to the attention of the court.

Other notable cases include Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis v Bangs [2014] 3 WLUK 3; and R(Graham) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2007] All ER (D) 383 which established an Article 3 breach for prisoners being handcuffed whist receiving chemotherapy treatment.

His caseload is predominantly civil claims in the county court and high court, reflecting his 24 years’ experience in this field. He leads the Civil Liberties special interest group at the firm, bringing a breadth of cases for assault, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, negligence, claims under the Human Rights Act 1998 and data protection breaches, in addition to inquests and judicial review.
