I am a partner working across our London and Cambridge offices, advising individuals and families through what are often some of the most difficult and emotionally demanding moments of their lives. My work spans a wide range of children and family matters; these often include an international element, where the legal and personal issues can feel particularly complex and overwhelming.
I’m ranked by leading independent legal guides, including Chambers and Partners, who call me: “A family lawyer with a great depth of knowledge and experience who approaches cases collaboratively and is a pleasure to work with.”
The Legal 500, another renowned UK legal guide, ranks me in its expert categories for Family, Children, and Divorce and Financial Remedy lawyers, stating: "Carmel Brown is fantastic. She demonstrates an acute awareness of the difficulties of divorce proceedings, the pitfalls and emotional drain that particularly challenging proceedings can have. Carmel provides considered, sensible advice that is very tailored to the particular client and situation, pivoting quickly when the situation demands."
I have extensive experience in resolving high‑value and intricate financial disputes, including cases involving nuptial settlements, offshore assets, and complex trust and company structures.
A large part of my practice is wealth protection. I regularly advise clients on pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements – often involving international elements – helping them safeguard their position both before and during marriage. I also advise on cohabitation matters, including the negotiation and drafting of cohabitation agreements. My approach is always tailored to my clients’ individual needs, with a clear understanding of their priorities and concerns.
I regularly advise on children matters and disputes, both domestic and international. I’ve successfully resolved many child relocation cases, acting for parents seeking permission to relocate and for those facing being separated from their child as the ‘left‑behind’ parent. I understand how deeply personal and emotional these cases can be and approach them with the sensitivity my clients deserve.
I’m committed to achieving the best possible outcome for every client and invest significant time in offering clear, pragmatic advice and ongoing support. I do everything I can to remain accessible and responsive throughout the process. I strongly believe that building a trusting client lawyer relationship is essential, and that empathy and open communication play a vital role in helping cases progress positively.

Carmel demonstrates wonderful levels of empathy and understanding but does not let this cloud her sound, commercial advice which aligns to the agreed strategy.
