Ron Scharnberg

Ron’s experience covers a broad range of industries, including the chemical, construction, drilling, ecological restoration, energy and energy services, food production, cannabis, finance and financial services, health care, LNG, logistics, manufacturing, media, mining, oil and gas and oilfield services, refining, retail, software, technology, telecommunications, and transportation industries.

Ron advises clients on a wide range of federal tax matters, with particular emphasis on the federal tax planning and structuring of domestic and cross-border/international mergers and acquisitions, tax-free reorganizations, spin-offs and divestitures, joint ventures and partnerships, restructurings, financial instruments, financing transactions, litigation funding, and equity and debt offerings. He is also involved in federal and cross-border/international tax planning and structuring for publicly traded and privately held companies.

He has experience in connection with upstream, downstream, midstream, and other energy and energy transition-related acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, tax equity, and tax partnerships, the Section 45Q tax credit for carbon capture and sequestration, federal fuel (gasoline and diesel) excise tax issues, and mitigation banking.

Ron is also a member of On-Chain: Reed Smith’s Crypto & Digital Assets Group. His recent experience includes analyzing and advising on tax related issues with respect to crypto related fund structures, blockchain lending platforms, and decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions, including the tax consequences crypto mining and crypto lending.
