Practice Areas

Rogier de Vrey is the Head of IP at CMS and has extensive experience advising on all aspects of intellectual property, technology, and media law.

He completed his PhD in unfair competition law, during which he worked at several renowned institutions, including the European Commission and the Max Planck Institute in Munich.

In his practice, Rogier focuses particularly on international intellectual property matters, both transactional and contentious. His expertise includes parallel trade, anti-counterfeiting, exploitation and cross border enforcement of IP rights, as well as IP licensing.

Rogier is an associate professor at Utrecht University and a member of the Editorial Board of the leading Intellectual Property and Advertising Law Magazine (IER). He has authored several publications in the field of IP/TMC, including co authoring the leading handbook on the enforcement of IP rights.

Recently, Rogier chaired the Study Committee of the Dutch Advertising Law Association (VvRr), contributing to the response to the ACM Guidance on the Protection of the Digital Consumer. As a member of the Working Group for the Dutch AIPPI chapter, he contributed to a report on “Inventorship of inventions made using artificial intelligence.” As an associate professor at Utrecht University, he also took part in a WODC commissioned project (the independent research institute of the Ministry of Justice and Security) on the regulation of autonomous decision making algorithms.

He also serves as a Panelist for the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) in Geneva, arbitrating domain name disputes.
