Hugh, a partner in Reed Smith’s Insurance Recovery Group, has represented policyholders in evaluating, settling and litigating insurance claims filed in state or federal court, trial of coverage and extra-contractual claims, as well as appellate work for over 40 years.
He and others at Reed Smith advocated for businesses in relation to insurance coverage for the COVID-19 pandemic, including seeking coverage under property insurance, business interruption, contingent business interruption, civil authority, and general liability insurance coverages. He was also active in securing coverage for a principal defendant in the Champlain Towers tragedy.
On two occasions, he has obtained eight-figure recoveries or awards in bad faith cases as well as multiple seven-figure recoveries in numerous first and third-party coverage actions. He has also briefed and argued more than 100 appeals.
Hugh has written on insurance issues and has appeared as a frequent lecturer for the American Bar Association, and other organizations that provide educational and business opportunities to professionals.
