Provided by Peter A Wald
Peter Wald retired from the partnership in December 2023 and is currently of counsel. Peter is one of the country’s most sought after, influential, recognized, and successful trial and appellate lawyers. He has an outstanding record of winning “bet the company” cases for US and international clients in federal and state courts across the country. His cases are routinely featured in the national press. From 2004-2011, Peter served as Global Chair of Latham & Watkins’ Litigation & Trial Department. In 2015, he was named a Securities MVP by Law360 for his ground-breaking work on behalf of Allergan in successfully resisting a hostile takeover attempt by Valeant Pharmaceuticals and Pershing Square Capital Management. In 2021, Peter won a complete defense jury verdict on behalf of NextGen Healthcare in the first U.S. “holder’s claim” to be tried in the past 90 years. The jury win was named “Top Defense Verdict” by the Daily Journal. In 2022, Peter prevailed at trial in the Delaware Court of Chancery for Larry Ellison, founder, Chairman and CTO of Oracle Corporation, and Safra Catz, Oracle’s CEO, in a shareholder derivative suit alleging that defendants breached their fiduciary duties and committed fraud by causing Oracle to overpay in its $9.3 billion 2016 acquisition of NetSuite. The case was one of the largest acquisitions ever to face stockholder challenge through trial in the Court of Chancery. Following a two-week trial, the court ruled in favor of Ellison and Catz on all claims. On appeal, the Delaware Supreme Court unanimously affirmed the Court of Chancery’s ruling (2025). Named by The American Lawyer as “Litigator of the Week” following both the Court of Chancery (2022) and Supreme Court (2025) victories.
