Ms Dong is an experienced lawyer with a focus on telecom and internet, technology, data privacy, information law, and general corporate matters. With over two decades of practice, she began her career in corporate and M&A law, guiding inbound investors through all stages of operations in China, from market entry and business expansion through setting up new presence or acquisitions.
With an interest in technology, Ms Dong has developed a deep understanding of new business models and technology and is one of the pioneer practitioners that expertise in digitalization and data protection in China more than 10 years ago. During her years of practice, she has assisted various retail and ecommerce companies, telecom and Internet companies, and companies in other industries with a need of digitalization in ways of platforms, apps, mini-programs or other online channels to build up and operate their services in China. She advises them from licenses and permits, data compliance, cross-border data transfer, arrangements with vendors and partners, and various issues throughout different operational stages.
By supporting clients in their operations in China, Ms. Dong has not only gained substantial experience in dealing with complex commercial transactions but also a deep understanding of the law and its implementation, government policies and the business environment, which enables her to assist clients to set up sensible strategies and explore practical approaches to doing business. She also helps clients with overseas data compliance such as GDPR and CCPA compliance alongside overseas lawyers.
Ms. Dong is a member of the All-China Bar Association.
Marissa has made significant contributions to the legal field through her writings, presentations, and participation in industry events. She has authored chapters in books such as "Global Privacy and Security Law" and "The Privacy, Data Protection and Cybersecurity Law Review." She has also contributed to publications such as "Chinese Civil Code: Privacy and Personal Information Protection," "Data Protection in China," and "Privacy in China: Overview." Her articles have been published on Thomson Reuters Practical Law, covering topics such as Chinese Civil Code, privacy, and personal information protection. She has also published handbooks and guides on data protection and contributed to industry-specific publications.
