ALAN ROTHMAN has more than two decades of experience representing pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer product, chemical, and other companies in connection with dozens of Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) proceedings, as well as class actions and individual mass tort product liability litigation. He has successfully argued issues of first impression and jurisdictional and coordination issues in federal and state court. Alan also has extensive end-game strategy experience, serving as settlement counsel with respect to the resolution of mass torts. In addition to his broad MDL experience, Alan regularly counsels clients with respect to corporate structure, successor liability, MMSEA/Medicare compliance, and professional ethics.
An industry thought leader, Alan has authored more than 100 articles regarding MDL and jurisdictional issues, including a bi-monthly Law360 column (for more than a decade) focusing on practice before the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. He has appeared before members of the Federal Rules Advisory Committee (and its MDL subcommittee). Alan was also twice honored with the “Outstanding Contributor” award by Lawyers for Civil Justice (LCJ), and more recently LCJ bestowed on Alan its highest accolade, the “Founders Award,” in recognition of his contributions to MDL legal reform.
Alan advises clients concerning cross-border litigation issues, including strategic coordination with Israeli counsel regarding parallel U.S. and Israeli mass tort litigation, and other local counsel regarding parallel litigation in Canada and Europe. Alan, a Board member of various not-for-profit and educational institutions, is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and received his undergraduate degree from Yeshiva University, where he was class valedictorian.
