Juliya Arbisman is an attorney with a wide-ranging international practice, having managed over 50 cases involving cross-border elements. Her experience encompasses international arbitration – both commercial and treaty-based – as well as cross-border litigation and matters of international public law, such as state immunities, diplomatic and consular law, and the recovery of sovereign assets.
She has represented clients in arbitrations conducted under a variety of institutional and ad hoc rules, including ICSID, LCIA, ICC, SIAC, HIAK, SCC, ICDR, AAA, IACAC, the Swiss Chamber, PCA and UNCITRAL. Juliya is well-versed in handling arbitration-related injunctions, set-aside proceedings, and the enforcement of arbitration awards and foreign court judgments. Her work includes participation in some of the largest arbitrations under the Energy Charter Treaty, particularly in emerging markets and throughout Africa. In addition to her advocacy work, Juliya serves as an arbitrator and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
Juliya has significant experience in the mining and energy sectors, advising clients on a range of issues such as investment structuring and restructuring, joint ventures, shareholder matters, directors’ duties, concessions, power purchase agreements, tax and customs matters, transfer pricing, project delays or defects, business and human rights, supply chain concerns, data protection and GDPR compliance, and regulatory investigations involving companies and key individuals. She has recently counseled both public and private entities on the green energy transition, particularly regarding critical minerals. Juliya is active in the mining industry as a frequent conference speaker, sector commentator, and board member of a London-based mining advisory firm.
Her practice also includes strategic mandates from Commonwealth jurisdictions in the Caribbean and Africa, and she has co-counseled on cases before the UK Privy Council arising from these regions. Juliya has appeared in numerous proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights, focusing on cases related to the protection of life and property rights, as well as fair trial issues in Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Chechnya.
