Julian Milford was called to the bar in 2000, and took silk in 2020. His main areas of practice are public law, freedom of information/data protection, and employment law. Julian acts in the field of public and constitutional law for central and local government, other public authorities, and individuals, and has been instructed for and against government in the civil courts and the ECtHR on issues of major public importance, including challenges to the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, the state pension age for women, bulk interception of communications on the basis of the Edward Snowden allegations, the Coronavirus Job Retention and Self-Employment Support Schemes, and the release of The Prince of Wales’ letters. He appears regularly in the employment tribunal and civil courts in employment cases, where he has experience across the Tribunal’s statutory jurisdiction, including extensive experience of large-scale discrimination and equal pay claims. That includes currently acting in mass supermarket equal pay litigation, and acting for the BBC in equal pay claims by “on air talent”. He has also acted in strike injunctions for clients including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Govia Thameslink Railway. He frequently advises on and acts in data protection and freedom of information cases, where his current cases include defending the regime for automatic transfer of US tax data from UK financial institutions to the IRS against allegations that it breaches data protection rights.
