Career
John Morrissett’s practice touches on all areas of IP, including a mix of pre-litigation diligence and counseling, litigation in district courts and before the PTAB and ITC, patent prosecution and strategic portfolio management and growth, and opinions of counsel related to invalidity and non-infringement of utility and design patents. He regularly teams up with non-IP colleagues as IP-related issues cross over into licensing, diligence, and corporate transactional matters, and serves as a seamless liaison to connect clients with appropriate colleagues in all practice areas as their needs evolve. John focuses first and foremost on the strategic goals of clients and leveraging various IP and other legal tools to cost-efficiently fit those goals.
An industrial systems engineering graduate from Virginia Tech who developed radar and communication systems with the U.S. Navy before starting his legal practice, John has experience with a wide range of electrical/computer, mechanical, oil & gas, and manufacturing-related technologies.
John serves on Troutman Pepper’s Virginia Recruiting Committee, the Board of Directors for the IP Section of the Virginia State Bar, and the Board for the Greater Richmond IP Law Association. He also maintains a strong pro bono practice, averaging over 150 hours annually over the past few years.
