Joined Freshfields in 1992; partner since 1994. Led the firm´s tax practice from 2000-05 and 2008-10, and was global managing partner of the firm for many years.
Stephan is a member of the Düsseldorf bar.
Author and editor of numerous publications on tax law and on private equity.
Stephan studied law at the universities of Bonn (Dr iur), Geneva and New York (LLM Tax 1990). Professor of business taxation at the University of Cologne since 2010. He speaks German, English and French.
