Experience

Santiago leads the firm's Intellectual Property and Data Protection practices and brings over two decades of IP experience across the public sector, private practice, teaching and international negotiation. He advises rights holders, technology companies and business groups on copyright, trademarks, patents, software, trade secrets and intangible-asset contracts, and on strategic portfolio management, filings, oppositions, cancellations, infringement actions and enforcement, as well as licensing, assignments and franchising.

His work is particularly relevant in matters requiring direct interaction with the National Service for Intellectual Rights (SENADI), and his recent practice includes AI-generated content, software registrations, notarial deposits of trade secrets, conflicts between distinctive signs and the protection of investment in research and innovation. A former Director General of SENADI and Executive Director of its predecessor, the IEPI, he has represented Ecuador before WIPO, led the country's negotiating team for the Marrakesh Treaty and later chaired its Assembly, and served as Vice-Chair of WIPO's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights.
