Clinical Negligence: Mainly Claimant

I qualified as a solicitor in 2009 and have been part of Irwin Mitchell since 2014. I’m a partner in our medical negligence team, working across our Newcastle and Leeds offices, and I lead our Newcastle team – one of the largest specialist claimant medical negligence teams in the North East. Over the years, I’ve supported many individuals and families through incredibly difficult circumstances, bringing both experience and care to every case.
I act exclusively for patients bringing claims against doctors and hospitals, whether in the NHS or private treatment. I represent clients individually or as part of group actions, always focused on achieving the best possible outcome while guiding them with compassion and clarity.
I help people who’ve been affected by a wide range of issues, including:
Birth injuries and wrongful birth claims
Brain injuries
Spinal cord injuries
Surgical errors
Amputations
Delays in diagnosis
Mental health negligence
Complex orthopaedic claims.
As well as supporting individuals, I’m also experienced in group action claims.
I’m accredited by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) as a Senior Litigator and a Clinical Negligence Specialist. I’m also a Legal Aid Supervisor. These positions recognise my expertise in handling complex and sensitive claims.
Chambers and Partners is one of the largest independent legal guides in the UK, and they praise my legal expertise and ability to work with clients: “Sam is an exceptional solicitor. His attention to detail is incredible and he has such an engaging personality.” I'm also recognised as a Next Generation Partner for clinical negligence in the Legal 500, an equally respected legal guide. This ranking recognises those who make a meaningful impact in their areas of expertise.
Aside from working to get my clients every penny of compensation they deserve for the negligence they’ve experienced, I also work to get them the answers and, wherever possible, an apology from those responsible. I appreciate how traumatic medical negligence can be for a person, which is why I make sure my clients feel heard and supported every step of the way.
Alongside my legal work, I’m passionate about supporting my local community. In 2015, I co-founded a disability sports club in Leeds with West Yorkshire Disability Sports and Boccia England.
Under my leadership, the Newcastle team has continued to grow in size, strength and reputation, handling some of the region’s most complex and high-value medical negligence claims.
The team’s expertise and commitment to outstanding client service have been recognised through several prestigious industry awards, including being repeatedly named Team of the Year at the Northern Law Awards and winning Insurance Firm of the Year at the Legal 500 Northern Powerhouse Awards. These accolades reflect the exceptional outcomes we achieve for clients, our collaborative approach, and our commitment to improving patient safety through the work we do.
