Arbitration and Civil & Commercial Litigation

Career

Rodrigo co-heads the Arbitration and leads the Civil & Commercial Litigation practices at Galicia.

He has appeared before local and federal trial and appellate courts in most circuits in Mexico, including the Supreme Court, representing both plaintiffs and defendants. He has also participated in dozens of arbitrations, many of them multi-jurisdictional, before the International Chamber of Commerce, London Court of International Arbitration, International Centre for Dispute Resolution and the Arbitration Center of Mexico as both a counsel and arbitrator.

Rodrigo has participated as a Mexican law expert in numerous arbitrations and judicial proceedings before the courts of the United States, and other nations, and before arbitral tribunals, including investor-state cases.

His clients benefit from the strategies he collaboratively designs with members of Galicia’s Transactional practice, including Banking & Finance, Insurance, and M&A partners, as well as with other Firm areas, such as Regulatory, Tax, Restructuring & Insolvency, Environmental, Compliance & Investigations, and Competition & Regulated Industries. This allows the Civil & Commercial Litigation and Arbitration practices to handle the complexity of domestic and international disputes, including class actions. His practice has also included taking on cases to overturn unfortunate results in prior stages of litigation under other legal representations.

Rodrigo has recently participated in some of the most relevant cases dealing with contracts, shareholders, insurance and reinsurance, infrastructure, construction and energy disputes, among many other subjects. Specifically, he has led the legal team in several litigations against Mexican government entities, including state-owned enterprises from the energy sector.

He is recognized as a leading expert and lawyer by renowned international publications, such as Chambers Latin American Guide and Chambers Global Guide, in the practice of Dispute Resolution: Arbitration. The Legal 500 Latin American Guide highlights him in the “Hall of Fame” for the same practice and as an expert in Dispute Resolution: Litigation. Leaders League recognizes him as a leading lawyer in both practices, and Latin Lawyer identifies him as an expert in the Mexican market for leading highly complex cases. Rodrigo co-heads the team recognized as “Elite” by the specialized publication, Global Arbitration Review (GAR100).

He is a member in the International Chamber of Commerce’s Mexican Committee and Latin American Group, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), London Court of International Arbitration, Mexican Arbitration Institute and Mexican Energy Law Academy, among other organizations. Rodrigo is multi-published and currently lectures in several postgraduate programs.

He is also a member of the Greener Arbitrations LAC Sub-Committee, which focuses on promoting the use of the Greener Arbitrations Protocols in Latin America and the Caribbean, as part of the Green Pledge.

Rodrigo graduated from Escuela Libre de Derecho (Mexico City) and obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from New York University. He is authorized to practice in Mexico and New York. As a “lawyer of all lawyers,” he was the first general counsel for the Mexican Bar Association whilst remaining active as a practitioner in his previous firm.

He is a member of Galicia’s Business Development Committee.
