Michael is a junior barrister specialising in all areas of intellectual property law. He has particular experience in patent litigation ranging from pharmaceutical cases to telecommunications technology, including FRAND litigation. He has acted as sole counsel in IPEC proceedings and in the Court of Appeal (Michael Penhallurick v MD5 [2021] EWCA Civ 1770), and in a High Court patent trial (after lead counsel was unable to act due to illness: Phillips v Xiaomi, HP-2020-000037 – case settled prior to judgment). Recent reported cases include Optis v Apple [2023] EWCA Civ 438, Saint Gobain v 3M [2022] EWHC 1018 (Pat), Sandoz v Bayer [2024] EWHC 796 (Pat) and Modernatx Inc v Pfizer Ltd [2024] EWHC 1695 (Pat).
Educated at Cardiff High School, Trinity College Oxford (Biochemistry 1st class 2006), Wolfson College Oxford (DPhil 2014), and Cardiff University (GDL 2015; BPTC 2016). Stephen Chapman Scholarship, Inner Temple, 2015.
Between his first degree and DPhil, Michael was a policy analyst at the Association of Medical Research Charities (2006 – 2008) and the Russell Group of Universities (2008 – 2010).
