Matt represents institutional health care providers in transactional, regulatory and compliance matters. Formerly head of Hunton’s health care practice, Matt focuses on driving results for the firm’s leading health care clients and coordinating comprehensive legal services for such clients among Hunton’s various practices. With over 40 years’ experience assisting clients across a range of complex matters in this highly regulated industry, Matt’s approach combines Hunton’s work ethic with creative problem solving. Equally adept leading transactions among providers, handling contested administrative proceedings, or seeking proactive resolutions to government investigations of provider conduct, Matt’s broad perspective drives practical solutions. His work has encompassed structuring and defending provider joint ventures, compliance advice on business arrangements between providers and referring physicians, contested certificate of need cases at administrative agency and appellate review levels, mergers among providers, disposition of assets by non-profit providers, and leading internal investigations and negotiating settlements of related qui tam cases.
Matt chaired the ABA Health Law Section’s Business Transactions Interest Group and the ABA Health Law Section’s Task Force on Accountable Care organizations. A past chair of the Health Law Section of the Virginia State Bar, he was twice appointed by Virginia governors to the Commission on Mandated Benefits.
