L. Viswanathan joined the firm (erstwhile Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co.) in 1994 as an Associate and was admitted to Partnership in the year 2000. He has rich experience in Infrastructure and Energy Projects, Project Finance, Financial Services, Banking, Restructuring and Insolvency. He advises leading corporate and financial institutions on infrastructure projects, structured lending, banking and financial services, debt restructuring and resolution of stressed assets.
Viswanathan has been involved in several landmark transactions and cases including, restructuring and settlement of Enron’s Dabhol Power Project, Swiss Ribbons v Union of India in which the constitutionality of the Bankruptcy Code was upheld by the Supreme Court, resolution of Essar Steel, resolution of the ILFS group, recapitalization of Yes Bank, sale of the distressed assets of Yes Bank, acquisition of controlling interest in the Mumbai Airport and significant M&A in infrastructure, oil & gas, financial services, media and retail sectors.
He has also been involved in some of the most significant debt resolution / restructuring transaction having recently advised the lenders on the resolution of debt of Dewan Housing Finance Ltd. and Centrum in revival of PMC Bank through a scheme of amalgamation.
He also serves as a visiting faculty for Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
He is member of the Insurance Advisory Committee (IAC) in terms of Regulation 3A of the IRDA (Insurance Advisory Committee) Regulations, 2000. He chairs a committee of IRDAI on plain language for policy wording and is a member of the IRDAI taskforce to examine the implications of the new Data Law on the insurance sector.
