Career

With a background that combines business experience, legal expertise, and technology, Jim Koenig takes a unique, integrated approach to meet his clients’ needs relating to global privacy compliance, innovative data uses, cybersecurity, breach response, litigation, regulatory enforcements, and class actions.

Jim co-chairs Troutman Pepper’s national Privacy + Cyber Practice. He has represented global clients in the financial services, energy, retail, pharmaceutical/health care, cable, telecommunications, car rental, airline, social media, technology, and manufacturing industries, including 35% of Fortune 100-listed companies.

Jim has represented an array of global clients on privacy and data security projects involving more than 125 countries and co-founded the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Jim also is a named inventor in six patent applications.

Drawing on his experience and reputation with regulators (including as an expert to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFBP) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights (OCR)), Jim also regularly advises companies on compliance practices and through regulatory investigations. His work has included serving as an FTC and OCR Independent Assessor or as the lead subject matter expert designing security and privacy in several high-profile enforcement proceedings involving social media, mobile, and health care companies.
