Career
Ignacio has developed a strong practice representing contractors, developers, concessionaires and project companies in high-stakes arbitration and litigation, particularly in disputes arising from construction and infrastructure projects. His experience includes handling claims related to EPC contracts, delay and disruption, cost overruns, and contractual breaches, often involving technically complex matters that require close integration between legal and engineering analysis.
A key differentiator of his practice is his combined expertise in arbitration and public law. He regularly advises on disputes involving concession contracts, administrative claims and regulatory frameworks, providing clients with a comprehensive approach to matters where private and public law intersect. This dual capability is particularly relevant in Chile’s infrastructure sector, where projects frequently involve State entities or regulatory oversight.
Prior to founding Vargas Abogados, Ignacio was a partner in the Projects, Construction and Dispute Resolution practice at Dentons Chile, where he was involved in complex arbitration and infrastructure-related disputes. His earlier experience includes advising within the Chilean public sector, supporting the Ministry of Public Works in the defense of concession contracts before arbitral and conciliatory bodies, which provides him with a valuable perspective on disputes involving governmental entities.
Ignacio is a member of the roster of arbitrators (Young Arbitrators) of the Centro de Arbitraje y Mediación de la Cámara de Comercio de Santiago (CAM Santiago), reflecting his recognition within the arbitration community in Chile.
He is also active in academia, having lectured in postgraduate programs on construction law and dispute resolution at leading Chilean universities, including Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad del Desarrollo.
