George Howell is Chair Emeritus of the firm’s Executive Committee and former head of its Tax and ERISA practice. George's practice focuses on the tax aspects of REITs, private investment funds, securitizations, and complex financial products. He is recognized nationally for his in-depth experience in the formation, structuring and financing of REITs. He is a former chair of the American Bar Association Tax Section and a former president of the American College of Tax Counsel. George has been active in REITs and real estate capital markets for more than 30 years. During that time, he has been involved in the creation of a number of novel structures involving hospitality, healthcare, and mortgage REITs, and most recently land bank REITs.

Personal

Mr Howell received his AB in Economics from Princeton University in 1978, graduating magna cum laude. He received his JD in 1981 from the University of Virginia, where he was on Law Review and the founding editor-in-chief of the Virginia Tax Review. He is a former Chair of the ABA Tax Section.
