Mathias’ practice covers all areas of Chambers’ work, including construction, engineering and infrastructure, energy and utilities, professional negligence and commercial disputes. In particular, he has extensive experience in adjudications, international arbitrations and public inquiries relating to high-value construction, infrastructure and energy projects.

Mathias has previously acted in a complex TCC dispute regarding the redevelopment of the Rolls Building, and his recent reported cases include DSVG Facade Ltd v Conneely Facades Ltd [2018] EWHC 4005 (TCC), Vinci Construction UK Ltd v Beumer Group UK Ltd [2018] BLR 575, DBE Energy Ltd v Biogas Products Ltd [2020] EWHC 1232 (TCC), and Energy Works (Hull) Ltd v MW High Tech Projects UK Ltd & Others [2020] EWHC 2537 (TCC) (preliminary issues); [2022] EWHC 3275 (TCC) (main trial).

Mathias is fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin. His recent international experiences include a HKIAC arbitration in Hong Kong governed by the Macau Civil Code, a high-profile public inquiry in Hong Kong, an arbitration relating to one of the largest power stations in South Africa, an ICC arbitration relating to a combined-cycle power plant in Central America, a SIAC arbitration relating to a Cambodian high-rise development, and two arbitrations relating to the design and construction of offshore oil rigs.

Publications

Mathias is the winner of the SCL Hudson Prize 2015. He is also the author of Informa’s annual Construction Law Review and various articles in the International Construction Law Review and Construction Law magazine.
