Jan advises on Bermuda, British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands law and he leads the Walkers Insolvency & Dispute Resolution Practice Group in London.
He specialises in multi-jurisdictional litigation and insolvency matters, advising bondholders, insolvency practitioners, financial institutions and directors on insolvencies, restructuring, shareholder disputes and complex litigation. He has particular expertise in interim protection for creditors and shareholders, and has acted as an expert witness on Cayman Islands law in foreign Court and arbitration proceedings.
Jan has 24 years’ experience in private practice, including 17 years practising offshore law, as a disputes and insolvency lawyer in London, the Caribbean and Asia. He is a member of the International Bar Association, INSOL and the American Bankruptcy Institute, and has been recognised by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.
Experience
Before joining Walkers in 2023, Jan was a partner and head of the Insolvency & Dispute Resolution practice of another offshore law firm. He spent 13 years in the Cayman Islands, moving back to London in 2021. Before that he trained and qualified with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London, working in their Hong Kong office.
Work Highlights

- Acting for the GP of a Cayman fund in a dispute over the GP's duties and obligations to distribute assets worth in excess of US$4bn to the fund's limited partners.
- Acting for a security trustee on the Cayman side of the enforcement of a loan against a Chinese company with an Italian football club as the security.
- Acting for an Ad Hoc Group of bondholders of Luckin Coffee, involving advancing claims in Cayman, securing simultaneous freezing injunctions and ensuring a successful outcome from the restructuring.
- Acting for the Cayman joint liquidators of Abraaj.
- Acting for the shareholders and directors of a number of Cayman companies that had gone into official liquidation.
- Acting for a private equity group in relation to its purchase of a business from a Bermuda insurance company that had entered provisional liquidation.
- Acting for shareholders in a dispute under Bermuda law involving the sale of sports media rights.
- Acting for the defendants to a circa US$235m claim in the BVI Court in connection with alleged unlawful transactions prejudicing - creditors, and accompanying freezing and receivership orders.
- Acting for the shareholders and directors of a number of BVI companies that had gone into official liquidation.
