Ian Heath Gershengorn

As one of the premier Supreme Court and appellate advocates and as a former US Acting Solicitor General, Ian Gershengorn has spent his career helping clients effectively position their most important cases for success. Ian works closely with clients to craft novel arguments and long-term legal solutions rooted in deep government, regulatory and public policy experience.

A collaborative partner to major corporations, Native American tribes and industry organizations, Ian confronts challenging problems at the intersection of politics, policy and the law. He leverages government experience handling cases on behalf of federal agencies, the President, cabinet officers and other government officials to craft appellate strategies tailored to clients’ unique needs and objectives.

Before rejoining Jenner & Block in 2017, Ian served in the Office of the Solicitor General during the Obama Administration, first as Principal Deputy Solicitor General and later as Acting Solicitor General. He supervised the government’s briefing in a range of high-profile cases involving the Affordable Care Act, Dodd-Frank, election law and redistricting, immigration reform, Title VII and same-sex marriage. Since returning to the firm, he has appeared regularly in the state and federal appellate courts, arguing on behalf of clients in industries such as national defense, healthcare, telecommunications, media and entertainment and banking. Ian currently serves as co-chair of the firm’s Appellate and Supreme Court Practice and teaches a course on the Roberts Court at Harvard Law School.
