Erling Opdal is one of Norway’s most experienced practitioners within restructuring and insolvency, with more than 30 years of experience in bankruptcy administration, restructuring processes and related corporate matters. He has been a partner at Ræder Bing since 1994 and is admitted to appear before the Supreme Court of Norway.
Opdal is regularly appointed by the Oslo City Court as trustee and administrator in complex and high-profile bankruptcy estates. He also serves as chair of creditors’ committees and is frequently engaged in judicial investigations and debt negotiation processes. His experience spans a significant number of major insolvency cases, often involving substantial assets, complex stakeholder structures and public scrutiny.
In addition to formal insolvency proceedings, Opdal is frequently engaged to advise on business restructuring and distressed situations at an early stage. With a background in economics, he provides commercially oriented advice to boards, management and owners on strategic, financial and structural matters, including debt settlements, corporate structuring and contractual frameworks.
He is widely recognised for his pragmatic and solution-oriented approach, and is a trusted adviser in complex and sensitive situations.
Alongside his practice, Opdal contributes to the development of insolvency law in Norway. He serves as editor for bankruptcy, insolvency and restructuring law in Gyldendal Rettsdata and is a frequent commentator in national media on insolvency-related issues. He has also been a member of Dagens Næringsliv’s expert panel on COVID-19-related restructuring and bankruptcy matters.
