Charles advises domestic and international clients on Canadian competition and foreign investment review law, including mergers, joint ventures, abuse of dominance, cartel investigations, misleading advertising and general compliance matters. He has significant expertise in securing competition and foreign investment approvals for complex M&A transactions. Charles also assists clients in major competition litigation and in negotiating resolutions with the Competition Bureau. Before rejoining Davies in 2012, he was Deputy General Counsel of the New Zealand Commerce Commission, managing the Commission’s major litigation portfolio and acting as counsel in a variety of complex competition proceedings. An active leader in the Canadian Bar Association, Charles serves on the Executive of the Competition Law and Foreign Investment Review Section and was responsible for launching the Section’s Counterfactual Podcast. Charles has previously served as chair of the Section’s Podcast Committee, Mergers Committee, Reviewable Matters/Unilateral Conduct Committee and Annual Competition Law Spring Conference. Charles is also involved in the Leadership of the American Bar Association’s Section of Antitrust Law and currently serves as vice chair of the Unilateral Conduct Committee.
