Alex Matthews

Alex is a “force to be reckoned with”. A persuasive and meticulous advocate, she fights for a successful outcome whether prosecuting or defending over a wide range of criminal work including serious sexual offending; firearms; drugs conspiracies; and terrorism.

Alex has acted as led junior defending in murder. She has also been led for the prosecution in multi-handed frauds; and a multi-complainant RASSO trial.

Acting as junior alone Alex is often briefed in multi-handed cases for the prosecution including multi-handed firearms cases and OCG related kidnap/false-imprisonment.

Alex is sought out for cases requiring sensitive handling, prosecuting complex multi-complainant cases involving multiple young, vulnerable, witnesses. Defending she is also briefed to assist young or mentally unwell clients, recently defending a young girl accused of holding the gun for a gang, obtaining an acquittal on a duress defence.

In 2017 she was seconded to CPS London working on cases spanning the Crown Court case load, from multi-handed aggravated burglaries to assaults of emergency worker.

Appointed The Recorder of the South Eastern Circuit 2022-2024; working for chambers’ MANCOM; and taking on roles as a pupil supervisor and inns advocacy trainer she is collegiate and pro-active as regards her wider participation in the criminal bar.
