Phelps’ commercial litigation practice represents clients in all manner of business difficulties that concern corporations, both large and small, and individuals. The firm regularly handles cases ranging from large, complex national class actions to smaller disputes. Because of the breadth of its experience, the firm’s commercial litigation attorneys have been called upon to represent both plaintiffs and defendants in multi-million dollar class actions, major bankruptcies, construction defect claims concerning several of the region’s more prominent structures, high profile breach of contract actions and significant securities cases.
Labor & Employment:
The labor and employment practice provides valuable solutions to large and small employers, across a spectrum of issues, including labor relations, employment discrimination and harassment, wage and hour, safety and health, leaves of absences, compensation issues, union concerns, civil rights and constitutional law issues, immigration, pension and welfare plan design and administration, as well as regulatory compliance and human resources issues. The practice’s lawyers participate in all phases of state and federal court litigation and arbitration, and have experience in a broad array of administrative charges and investigations before federal, state and municipal administrative agencies.
Insurance & Reinsurance:
The insurance and reinsurance practice at Phelps serves underwriters, insurers, claims professionals and brokers in resolving issues involving policy language, coverage, reinsurance, claims handling, regulation, underwriting, risk management and general insurance business practices. The group draws from long-term working partnerships with insurance and reinsurance clients, including over 50 years of service to the London market.
One of the largest admiralty practices in the country, Phelps has 35 attorneys across the Gulf South region dedicated to handling clients’ opportunities and challenges on the regional, national and international level. Phelps represents a diverse client base that ranges from small offshore service companies to multinational corporations in areas including maritime contracts, international shipping, maritime finance, environmental issues, litigation and services to the oil industry operating in the Gulf of Mexico.
