Chambers Canada Guide 2025: Summary

The 2025 release was the 10th edition of a dedicated Canada Guide at Chambers & Partners and our core methodology remained the same. Our skilled team of researchers conducted in-depth research into the Canadian legal market between February and June 2024.

During this time our researchers spent several months carefully analysing law firm submissions and conducting thousands of interviews with client referees to ensure our knowledge and understanding of each submitting practice was extensive, allowing us to provide market-leading reviews and rankings.

Chambers Canada Guide 2025 Submissions

Each year, law firms of all sizes, from national and international law firms to provincial boutiques submit to Chambers Canada for recognition. Firms submit both a submission document detailing recent work, and a list of referees they wish to be contacted, and our dedicated research team will make ranking determinations on the basis of the resulting information.

The number of firms submitting for recognition continues to increase year on year, with the 2025 Canada Guide seeing 165 law firms providing our research team with information.

Any law firm or lawyer within Canada is eligible for recognition in the guide. For more information on how to submit for recognition, please see our onboarding page here.

Chambers Guide 2025: Highlights

Chambers Canada Guide – Changes and Updates

Following the success of the 2024 Canada Guide, for the 2025 Canada Guide we continued to accept an increased number of referees, 30 per section, up from the previous limit of 20.

Due in part to the increased feedback levels we received as a result, we were able to ensure that our recognition of lawyers and law firms accurately reflects the state of each market by making changes where appropriate.

  • New band 6 for lawyers in Litigation: General Commercial – Ontario, Litigation: General Commercial – British Columbia and Construction – Nationwide – Canada
  • New band 5 for lawyers in Litigation: General Commercial – Alberta, Projects: PPP & Infrastructure – Nationwide – Canada and Intellectual Property: Litigation– Nationwide – Canada

New Litigation: Highly Regarded Tables

Over the past 2 years, our research team has seen a notable uptick in submissions received from litigation boutique law firms, as well as the litigation departments of full-service single-province boutique law firms.

The resulting research into these lawyers and departments highlighted the increasing prominence of lawyers and firms acting on contentious mandates on a provincial level. To capture this market segment, we decided to introduce new Litigation: General Commercial: Highly Regarded tables for Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Québec

You can review these new tables at the links above. For more information on these tables, or to suggest new practice areas for Chambers Canada to research into, please email James Roberts here.

Gender Diversity in Canada 2025

We continuously strive to partner with all law firms to ensure their female partners and associates are included in our research process, as diversity and inclusion in the legal market are vital focuses.

A specific initiative for the 2025 Canada Guide was a concerted attempt to make sure that the gender balance of lawyers interviewed was as close to 50/50 as possible. This was in an attempt to ensure that we avoid an echo chamber effect in our research and hopefully shine a light on individuals who may have been underrepresented in the research process in previous years.

Across the research period, 44% of our call requests were with female lawyers, which ultimately resulted in 42% of eventual lawyer interviews being with female partners.

Partly as a result of these efforts to speak to a range of individuals in the profession, 30% of the lawyers recognised in the 2025 Canada Guide are female, a 2% increase on last year's figures.

Associates to Watch and Up-and-Coming Lawyers in Canada 2025

Another focus of the Canada Guide for the 2025 release was to enhance our coverage of both associates and younger partners in the guide, to ensure that we remain at the forefront of identifying the next generation of elite lawyers in the Canadian legal market.

By instructing the research team to pay particular attention to the presence of associates and recently promoted partners on submission documents, and then cross-reference this against the lawyers attracting significant positive commentary from clients and market sources, we were able to achieve the following increases in recognition:
