The awards are based on the research for the 2025 edition of Chambers Canada. These awards reflect a law firms pre-eminence in key practice areas. 

They also reflect notable achievements over the past 12 months including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service.

Chambers Canada’s Banking & Financial Markets Law Firm of the Year award is decided in relation to firm performances in both the Banking & Finance and Capital Markets sections of the Canada Guide, and Goodmans LLP is the deserved winner due to the recognition achieved by the firm in both areas.

Brad Ross earns first-time ranking in the Capital Markets: Debt & Equity table off the back of completing several impressive cross-border transactions. Separately, Celia Rhea is promoted to band 3 in our Banking & Finance table due to her significant representation of both borrowers and lenders.

She is joined by two new entrants to the table for Goodmans LLP, Daniel Dedic and Kyle Gerow, who earn Up-and-Coming designations to cap an impressive year for the firm.

The Bennett Jones Class Action Litigation team has had a phenomenal year, capped off by taking home the inaugural Chambers Canada Class Action Law Firm of the Year award. Co-heads of the practice group Michael Eizenga and Cheryl Woodin continue to act on industry leading class action disputes, with Cheryl’s promotion to band 1 this year completing a meteoric rise in our rankings in just a 5-year period.

Other team members also achieve acclaim this year, particularly Ilan Ishai for product liability disputes and Emrys Davis for Competition class actions. Successes in the Canadian Hockey League abuse class action and the first common issues trial concerning business losses arising out of pandemic-related government shutdowns were notable highlights.

After a break of several years, the Chambers Canada Construction Law Firm of the Year award makes its return and is won by prominent boutique firm Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP. 

The firm boasts market-leading bench strength throughout all experience levels, from Associate to Watch Nicholas Reynolds and newly ranked Up-and-Coming lawyer Catherine Gleason-Mercier, through to industry titans such as Bruce Reynolds and Sharon Vogel.

A number of high value representations, including of Aviva in relation to the receivership of “The One” mixed-used condominium skyscraper, further evidence the team’s impressive performance this past year.

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP once again evidenced significant capabilities in the area of corporate law, with this year’s performance in Chambers Canada 2025 earning it the commendation of Corporate Law Firm of the Year. In our Québec table, Joanna Myszka was recognised for the first time as an Up-and-Coming lawyer, while Philippe Bourassa was promoted to band 3.

A pair of Vancouver-based lawyers also rose in the rankings, with Bob Wooder and Arash Amouzgar promoted to band 2 and band 3 respectively.

Finally, in Alberta, the firm has a particularly strong performance, where both Jeff Bakker and Ross Bentley evidenced sufficiently sophisticated work to rise to band 2 and band 1 in the table respectively, further enhancing the firm’s credentials in the province.

McCarthy Tétrault LLP earned commendation as Chambers & Partners Employment Law Firm of the Year due to strong performances from its teams in Toronto and Vancouver in particular. In British Columbia, Donovan Plomp was promoted to band 2, which, in combination with strong client feedback and significant appearances before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, contributed to the entire department rising to band 2.

The firm also saw a number of lawyers rise in our Ontario rankings, with Kate McNeill-Keller moving up to band 5 and Sunil Kapur achieving band 1 recognition off the back of fantastic feedback and highly sophisticated work.

Fasken is the deserved winner of the Chambers Canada IP & Life Sciences Law Firm of the Year award, with ample evidence for why being found in the results of this year’s research.

The firm leveraged its significant strength on regulatory mandates to rise to band 1 in our Life Sciences table, with individual lawyers Mathieu Gagné and Timothy Squire also rising to bands 1 and 2 respectively.

Fasken also evidenced their deep bench at all levels by securing recognition for two Up-and-Coming lawyers, Dara Jospé in Life Sciences: Regulatory and Michael Shortt in Intellectual Property: Litigation.

Norton Rose Fulbright earned the 2024 Chambers Canada Litigation Law Firm of the Year thanks in no small part to the volume of lawyers in the area earning first-time rankings in the guide.

An unprecedented number of junior lawyers in Alberta entered the guide this year, with Bryan Walker, Gunnar Benediktsson and Kelly Moffet-Burima all achieving recognition as Up-and-Coming lawyers.

Equally impressively, three lawyers earned a ranking for the first time in various provinces, with Calgary-based Ray Chartier, Thomas Moran in Vancouver and François-David Paré in Montréal all gaining recognition in Chambers Canada 2025.

Stikeman Elliott LLP have further demonstrated their strong capacity to advise on Energy mandates through significant year-on-year recognition for a number of key lawyers, most notably in the Oil & Gas sector.

Co-head of the firm’s energy group Chrysten Perry achieved band 1 in the Transactional sub-table, as did Dennis Langen in the Regulatory section, with both earning acclaim for impressive recent work. The firm showcased its expertise in Mining transactions, with Ivan Grbešić earning promotion to band 4 and Steven Bennett entering the table as an Up-and-Coming partner as a result.

These combined successes make Stikeman Elliott LLP the deserved recipient of the Chambers Canada Projects & Energy Law Firm of the Year award for 2024.

Dentons Canada showcased an array of impressive work in the real estate industry this year, which translated to positive representation in Chambers Canada 2025 rankings.

High value property acquisitions and a wealth of positive feedback saw the firm promoted to band 2 in Alberta, while lateral hires in Montréal saw the firm achieve department recognition in Québec for the first time. Chantal Sylvestre in Montreal and senior associate Sasha Vukovic in Vancouver also entered the rankings, adding further to a deep bench that boasts Up-and-Coming lawyers in Alberta, British Columbia and Québec.

Calgary based law firm Burnet Duckworth & Palmer LLP was awarded the Chambers Canada Regional Law Firm of the Year award for 2024, which recognises the most impressive single-practice or full-service boutique firm operating principally out of a single province in Canada.

The firm capped off an impressive 12-month period with a strong performance in Chambers & Partners rankings across multiple practice areas. Litigator Jeff Sharpe was promoted to band 2, off the back of noteworthy appearances in cross-border court and arbitral proceedings, while employment lawyer Bob Graham moved up to band 3 following an equally commendable showing.

Corporate lawyer Lonny Tetley also entered the guide for the first time, while the firm retained department rankings in several specialist areas, including Energy: Oil & Gas and Transportation: Aviation.
