Practice Areas

Roland is Stephenson Harwood's senior partner and leads the art and cultural property group. He has over 30 years' experience advising clients in the art market, on both contentious and transactional matters, and acts for a range of clients, including collectors, dealers, auctioneers, brokers, artists, museums and institutions.

His work in this area is a blend of dispute resolution, risk management and insurance - making him a go-to advisor for many art market clients. He regularly advises on matters ranging from the sale and purchase of fine art to the standard terms of business of major market players to export, looted art and related issues. Roland also has extensive experience in matters involving title, provenance and attribution. Roland is a member of the Art, Cultural and Institutions Committee of the IBA and recognised by Chambers for his "very detailed knowledge of the art industry".

Roland also has long experience in auction law and has advised leading auction houses on a range of matters, from the enforceability of their conditions of sale to bidding disputes and authenticity warranty claims. Roland is the firm's relationship partner for international auction house Christie's, a long-standing client of the firm's London and Hong Kong offices.
