Career
Robert qualified as a solicitor in Scotland in 1988 and gained dual qualification in England and Wales in 1994. He was accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Employment Law in 2009, as a Specialist in Discrimination Law in 2015 and as a Specialist in Regulation of Professional Conduct Law in 2022. He has also been admitted as a Solicitor Advocate with Higher Rights of Audience since 2013.
Robert has specialised in employment law for almost 30 years, developing his experience initially in BT’s in-house legal team where he conducted its Tribunal hearings throughout Scotland and the north of England before returning to private practice in 2006.
Since joining Clyde & Co in 2011, Robert has specialised in contentious employment law and has conducted many high value, high profile whistleblowing and discrimination cases.
In addition to employment law, Robert is also experienced in the professional regulatory field and advises Police Scotland’s Professional Standards Department in conduct cases involving police officers as well as appearing regularly on behalf of the Chief Constable of Police Scotland in the Police Appeals Tribunal.
In the area of social care professional regulation, Robert was previously a legal adviser to the lay panels appointed by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) to deal with Conduct and Fitness to Practice cases and in 2021 he was appointed as a Legally Qualified Chair of its Fitness to Practise panels.
