Richard Lizius is a partner in the McCarthy Tétrault Litigation and Intellectual Property Litigation groups. Richard’s particular focus is the telecommunications industry, with expertise in administrative law, appellate litigation, copyright and patent litigation, and contracts.

Richard appeared as counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada in the Vavilov administrative law trilogy (the most important administrative law decision of the last decade). Richard has also been counsel on the most significant judicial reviews for the telecommunications industry including: judicial review of the CRTC’s implementation of the Online Streaming Act, judicial review of numerous CRTC wholesale rate setting decisions (both reviewing and defending CRTC decisions), judicial review of the wholesale Code and judicial review of the CRTC’s rulings concerning Superbowl advertising.

Richard has also been counsel on major copyright cases for the telecommunications industry, especially cases concerning the “notice & notice” regime and online copyright infringement, as well as significant telecommunications patent cases concerning both television and cellular technology.

Richard also maintains a general litigation practice including contract, oppression and negligence disputes.
