Richard was called to the Bar in 1983. He was appointed Silk in 2006, a Bencher of Lincolns’ Inn in 2014 and a Legal Chair to the Financial Reporting Council in 2016. He has a broad-based international litigation practice with a particular expertise in complex commercial cases where corporate issues arise in a litigation context. Recent examples of the types of work he does include: defending fraud allegations made against his client in a 6-week US$4bn ICC arbitration; successfully defending HSBC in a 4-month trial in Cayman against $2bn professional negligence claims made in connection with the collapse of Madoff’s fraudulent Ponzi scheme, including defending 2 appeals to the Privy Council. More recently he has been involved in disputes raising cross-border issues regarding the enforceability of mudaraba financing for Middle East oil and gas interests and bond holder disputes regarding financing for Chinese coal gas production. Other examples of recent work include advising on joint venture agreements in the nuclear industry and defending claims arising from the multi-billion dollar collapse of NMC Healthcare. He appears in the Senior Courts in England and has argued cases in Cayman, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man and the European Court of First Instance. He has conducted arbitrations under ICC, LCIA and SCC Rules.
