Mayte Sanchez is a Partner and co-heads the Arbitration practice group at Morgan & Morgan. She also plays a leading role in the Firm's Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice area.
She has more than 15 years of experience, working as an attorney in multiple commercial, civil and administrative litigation representing corporate clients and governmental entities both domestic and foreign, where she has had the privilege of successfully representing them demonstrating exceptional skills in the defense of their interests and rights.
Expert lawyer in arbitration and mediation processes that are handled Ad-Hoc or under the rules of institutions such as the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the Center for Conciliation and Arbitration of Panama (CeCAP), the Center for Conflict Resolution (CESCON), among others. His experience also allows her to appear before civil and administrative courts, in complementary proceedings to active or pending arbitration claims.
Within her outstanding experience, has represented a company in an international arbitration related to the breach of an International Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement (ERPA) with a favorable award. In addition, she advised and represented a Fuel Free Zone administration company in an arbitration claim against the contractor of the fuel storage tanks, a dock for Panamax and Post-Panamax ships, where she also obtained a favorable award.
Represented the Panamanian State in its first arbitration proceeding under the Free Trade Agreement between Central America and Panama, under its dispute resolution mechanism, initiated by Guatemala and related to the cancellation of import registrations of fruit juices.
Likewise, she was part of the defense team of a Hong Kong-based multinational conglomerate leader in the port sector in a process of annulment of an ICC arbitration award issued in favor of the Port Authority of Ecuador, obtaining a favorable ruling under Panamanian law. This decision set a precedent at international and national level, highlighting its legal significance and implications.
In another area, she has obtained favorable rulings of indemnification against the State through the Contentious-Administrative and defended the interests of several banking and insurance companies in administrative sanctioning processes.
In pro-bono matters, she regularly advises non-governmental organizations, including advising on the creation of the first Central Blood Bank (Hemocentro) in Panama.
