Practice Areas

Matthew J. McConkey advises clients on international trade matters, with emphasis on trade remedies such as antidumping and countervailing duty cases, as well as Section 201 (global safeguards), Section 232 (national security), and Section 301 (unfair trade investigation) actions.

Antidumping and countervailing duty matters:

Matthew defends foreign producers and US importers against US unfair trade allegations and assists US industries facing unfair import competition or surges. He has extensive experience in Asia, having worked there for six years as an international trade lawyer gaining knowledge around Vietnamese, Indonesian and Chinese companies and their business practices. Matthew leverages this experience for clients, whether defending manufacturers in those countries or assisting US manufacturers facing injurious imports from them.

Matthew supports clients in Section 201, 232 and 301 actions by using Mayer Brown's Government and Communications Teams to address opportunities and challenges.

Customs matters:

Matthew has knowledge on the US import process, as he began his legal career with the Chief Counsel's Office of US Customs and Border Protection. His experience includes tariff classification, valuation, country of origin determinations, effective use of tariff elimination or reduction programs, and resolution disputes from US Customs and Border Protection decisions.

Matthew has been interviewed often due to his knowledge of matters regarding international trade, customs and antidumping. In addition to being interviewed by the Chicago Tribune, China Daily, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg's, International Herald Tribune, China Economic Review and Caijing Magazine, he has appeared on Chinese television regarding "Solutions to China-US Trade Surplus."
