Mario Ortu graduated in law at the University of Padua, with the highest marks (J.D., 1985). After his traineeship at the law firm of Prof. Miele, Mario Ortu joined the law firm Pavia e Ansaldo, where he became partner in 1995. Between 1999 and 2012 he was a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he led the Italian corporate department and, more recently, was appointed as member of the Firmwide Leadership Team of the FIG Sector Group. As of 1 January 2013 Mario and his group joined Orsingher Avvocati Associati, that became Orsingher Ortu – Avvocati Associati.

He is specialised in corporate and commercial law and his wide range of experiences extends to (domestic and multi-jurisdictional) mergers and acquisitions, establishment of joint ventures, dismissals of companies, public takeover offers, restructurings and reorganisations. He has advised clients involved in the most relevant domestic and cross-border transactions in the last years and acts as recognised advisor of important (domestic and international) financial institutions, private equity funds and primary industrial groups.
