Machteld is partner in our Litigation group, specialising in litigation, and has particular expertise in mass claims and follow-on damages litigation. Acting on behalf of national and international companies in all types of litigation, Machteld has broad experience at all levels of the judiciary in the Netherlands, including the Supreme Court.

Machteld publishes and lectures on Dutch procedural law and is chairwoman of the editorial board of the new journal, Mass Claims. She was named ‘Legal Woman of the Year, 2018’ by Legal Women and is noted by the Legal 500 in the categories Commercial Litigation and EU and Competition. She is referred to by clients as "extremely quick thinker, [who] points right to the pain-points of the legal argument at stake, even in a foreign jurisdiction" (Legal 500, 2021).

Machteld heads De Brauw’s Pro Bono Practice. In recognition of her Pro Bono commitment and achievements, Machteld has recently been shortlisted in the category of ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ for the Chambers’ Europe Awards, 2021 and 2022. In 2019, De Brauw's Pro Bono Practice was awarded the ‘European Pro Bono Program of the Year’ Award during Chambers' Diversity & Inclusion Awards. In 2014 – after being seconded to the New York law firm Paul, Weiss – Machteld was also awarded The Legal Aid Society’s (US) Pro Bono Publico Award.

Machteld’s recent work includes advising:

DAF Trucks in a large number of follow-on damages proceedings following the EC decision imposing EUR 3 billion fines on European truck manufacturers;

Airbnb in several proceedings related guest service fees;

TenneT in follow-on proceedings in relation to the GIS-cartel;

the Group companies of Yukos Oil, (formerly Russia’s largest oil company), in proceedings about the preservation and recovery of assets following the Russian Federation’s illegitimate expropriation of Yukos Oil.
