Ken is the Managing Partner of Banwo & Ighodalo, a leading first-class multi-disciplinary law firm with offices in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria. Ken obtained his law degree from the University of Uyo, and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1991. Ken is recognized, and has been ranked as a world leading energy lawyer for the preceding fifteen (15) years. He has been involved in most of the firm’s numerous energy and natural resources transactions, as well as infrastructure projects.

Ken also routinely advises numerous indigenous oil and gas players on all aspects of the Nigerian oil and gas sector, including Shoreline Natural Resources Limited, ND Western Limited, Oriental Energy Resources Limited, Sahara Group and the Seven Energy Group. Ken has extensive experience advising on all aspects of the Nigerian Electricity supply industry. He was actively involved in the Nigerian Power sector reform initiative, and is presently involved in advising on gas utilization projects as well as solar power projects in Nigeria.

Work Highlights

Since he joined B&I in 1993, Ken has been involved in nearly all of the Firm's energy & project finance transactions and has significant expertise in these areas of practice. Ken also has considerable experience in maritime and commercial litigation & arbitration.

He has advised on matters in relation to the oil, gas and power sectors (covering upstream, midstream and downstream sub-sectors) and an array of broad issues affecting those sectors, including regulatory matters; projects conceptualization, structuring, development and implementation; and financing.

He advised the Federal Government of Nigeria on the implementation of initiatives in the power sector such as: (i) the World Bank funded Legal Workstream Consultancy, arranged for the Bureau of Public Enterprises (“BPE”), in connection with the unbundling of National Electric Power Authority (“NEPA”) and the establishment of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc., the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (“NERC”); and (ii) the Nigerian Infrastructure Advisory Facility (a DFID funded work stream administered by Adam Smith International) which commissioned the drafting of model Power Purchase Agreements and Vesting Contracts adopted by the NERC for trading in electricity in the Nigerian electricity market.

He is presently leading the team advising the Board of Trustees, Ogoni Trust Fund, a body set up to manage and disburse the US$1,000,000,000 Ogoni Trust Fund, which is to be applied towards the environmental rehabilitation of Ogoniland, Rivers State, Nigeria. He is also advising Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc in connection with the conceptualisation, structuring, development, financing building and operation of the proposed Assa North/Ohaji South Unit Area Gas Processing Plant with a capacity of 300MMSCFD.
