Juan Rodriguez is a London-based partner at Sullivan & Cromwell and co-leads the Firm’s European Competition Group and is co-head of the Firm’s Antitrust Group. He is qualified in France (Avocat à la Cour (Paris Bar)) and England and Wales (Solicitor). Mr. Rodriguez’s practice involves representing some of the world’s largest companies in award winning transactions and behavioural competition law and EU state aid matters such as “Matter of the Year” for his work on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ merger with Peugeot S.A., to create new company Stellantis N.V. at GCR Awards 2021 and “Matter of the Year” and “Merger Control Matter of the Year” at GCR Awards 2019 for his work on Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto. He has represented clients in several of the leading EU Commission cartel cases (Trucks, Cathode Ray Tubes, Forex, Exhausts, End of Life Vehicles and Aviation Insurance) and state aid matters (most notably, Fiat in the Luxembourg tax ruling state aid proceedings at the EU Commission and, on appeal, in the EU General Court and Court of Justice).
Mr. Rodriguez has extensive experience before the EU Commission and national competition authorities in Europe on merger review proceedings and cartel investigations. His practice has expanded in recent years to UK (NSI Act) and international co-ordination of foreign investment approvals as this area has become an increasingly important part of the regulation of international mergers and joint ventures. He has also been involved in some of the first merger investigations by the EU Commission under the EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation.
