Irena Petkova is Deputy Head of the firm’s Energy practice. With over 15 years of experience, Irena covers all areas of energy law, including renewable energy, nuclear, gas, mining, fuels, electricity generation, distribution, energy trading, regulatory matters, and project finance.
Irena has extensive experience advising on major energy projects from both Bulgarian and EU law perspectives, focusing on regulatory frameworks, licensing, market entry, and project development. She plays a key role in structuring and implementing energy projects, supporting clients throughout the full lifecycle—from initial investment and permitting to operation and compliance.
Irena has been involved in major gas and nuclear projects, including advising on the Bulgarian aspects of the Shah Deniz 2 and Nabucco gas pipelines, and providing legal support for the development of the Belene nuclear power plant. She has also assisted with the regulatory, legal, and structuring aspects of various energy infrastructure projects.
In recent years, Irena has focused heavily on renewable energy and decarbonisation, advising on transactions related to photovoltaic projects and wind energy assets.
Her practice also includes climate change and environmental law, with a strong emphasis on the decarbonisation of the energy sector.
