The Chambers Parklane Plowden Chambers is regarded amongst lawyers and legal commentators as the pre-eminent set on the North Eastern Circuit. Barristers work in dedicated specialist practice groups in Civil, Family, Employment, Chancery and Commercial law. A large set, located in both Leeds and Newcastle, Chambers provides a wide choice of counsel capable of handling a broad spectrum of work at all levels of complexity. Work Undertaken:

Abuse Claims: Expertise in representing survivors of ‘historical’ and more recent sexual, physical and emotional abuse suffered in a variety of settings including family homes, religious institutions, schools and colleges, children’s homes, foster care, football and other youth clubs.

Business & Commercial: With Business and Property Courts in both Leeds and Newcastle, the team are wellpositioned to advise and represent businesspeople and all forms of corporate entities. They have expertise in relation to contractual, company, shareholder, partnership, banking, sale of goods, insolvency, intellectual property and technological disputes.

Civil Fraud: Home to a highly regarded team of barristers who have a long-standing reputation for expertise in the field of civil fraud. Experience that spans decades mean the team are routinely instructed by both insurers and individuals on high profile and complex cases.

Clinical Negligence: Chambers has the most extensive clinical negligence team on Circuit and is home to the majority of ranked barristers in the North East. The large team “boasts outstanding capabilities in diverse clinical negligence claims” (Chambers & Partners, 2017) and “possess impressive expertise covering core issues” (Chambers & Partners, 2019). The team undertake a wide range of clinical negligence, regulatory and disciplinary work – offering considerable experience and a proven track record in advocacy, mediation and advisory work.

Costs & Litigation Funding: The specialist team are trusted advisors to a broad client base in relation to all aspects of costs and funding. Members have expertise in CFA’s, DBA’s and Group Litigation. This includes drafting CFA’s, GLO’s costs, sharing orders and providing advice on funding combinations.

Court of Protection: Home to a specialist Court of Protection & Mental Health team comprising of expertise at varying levels of seniority who deal with property & affairs and health & welfare work. Instructions are received from solicitors, public bodies of all kinds and the Official Solicitor. They have particular experience dealing with contested deputyship applications, statutory Will and gift applications (including the ability to advise on all associated taxation issues) and issues concerning incapable trustees. They regularly advise in relation to issues of mental capacity concerning trusts and Wills and act for protected parties in the High Court.

Employment: Routinely involved in complex and high-profile litigation appearing in leading cases in areas such as whistleblowing, discrimination and equal pay. They are instructed by a wide range of clients including large and small private sector organisations, NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, Trade Unions and individual employees.

Family: Children With over 20 barristers, including two much sought-after QC’s, they are the go-to team for local authorities, parents and children in the most complex private and public law cases. Members appear at every level of the family courts, including regular appearances in the High Court and Court of Appeal. Family: Property & Finance The team have a wealth and breadth of experience and expertise in all aspects of the financial consequences or relationship breakdown. They cover matrimonial finance following the breakdown of a marriage or civil partnership; TOLATA claims over property and other claims arising from unmarried cohabitation; financial provision for children under Schedule 1 and Claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family & Dependents) Act. Industrial Disease: The North East has a rich industrial heritage which has given rise to a breadth of industrial disease cases spanning decades. As a result, members of the team have developed an inimitable understanding of these often legally and factually complex cases. Several barristers have been involved in the authority cases in this field.

Inquests & Fatal Accidents: Barristers in the team have a strong working knowledge of coronial law and a reputation for sensitive handling of the most emotionally difficult cases. With considerable expertise in the area of deaths arising in custody, care homes and other institutions, the team are frequently involved in high-profile inquests.

Insurance: Nationally recognised expertise in all areas of insurance litigation, acting for many leading insurers and law firms in both claimant and defendant roles. The large specialist team dominate this sector in the North. Appointments to key insurance panels and securing contracts with major national law firms has propelled Chambers to the very forefront of the insurance law sector.

Military: Chambers has several barristers who are experienced in military compensation claims. Barristers represent serving and former members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and Reserves, as well as civilians employed by the Ministry of Defence.

Personal Injury: Chambers has the largest group of specialist personal injury barristers of any other chambers on the North Eastern Circuit. Chambers has secured over 30 contracts, service level agreements and fee protocols with a broad range of organisations. Barristers routinely appear in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court on a broad range of injury law cases. These range from the most complex, high-value cases involving life-changing injuries, to routine fast-track cases.

Probate, Inheritance & Trusts: Chambers has one of the largest specialist probate, inheritance and trusts teams outside London. They handle a range of contentious and non-contentious work at all levels of seniority and complexity, including proprietary estoppel claims, undue influence and capacity claims, rectification of Wills and trusts, deeds of variation, deeds of appointment and advancement and trusteee indemnities.
