Jennifer T Nijman, Susan M Franzetti, and E Lynn Grayson of Nijman Franzetti LLP each have more than 30 years experience in all aspects of environmental law. After leaving two of Chicago’s largest firms, Ms Nijman and Ms Franzetti formed Nijman Franzetti LLP in early 2008 in order to better serve their clients. Ms Grayson joined in 2018 after chairing the environmental practice group of another large Chicago law firm. In a boutique, women-owned firm setting, Nijman Franzetti LLP offers clients hands-on personal attention at reasonable hourly billing and alternative rate structures. Kristen Gale, a partner with Nijman Franzetti LLP, formerly served as Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, where she represented the State of Illinois in environmental enforcement matters. Genevieve Essig serves as of counsel to the firm and was previously a member of the environmental practice group at a large Chicago-based firm. Associate Vincent Angermeier joined the firm in 2014 after working in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and as a summer clerk at the Department of Justice’s Environmental Division. The firm welcomed associate Molly Snittjer in 2019 from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Environmental Bureau.

Nijman Franzetti LLP handles environmental legal projects in the areas of water, land and air. The firm handles all aspects of environmental litigation defense and enforcement, including administrative and civil agency enforcement matters, private party actions for property contamination, and toxic tort cases.
The firm has broad experience before the Illinois Pollution Control Board in enforcement matters, rulemaking proceedings, seeking variances and adjusted standards, and representing clients in permit appeals and siting hearings. Nijman Franzetti LLP provides targeted legal reviews of permit applications, prepares and files regulatory submissions, negotiates and submits environmental plans, and handles day-to-day environmental regulatory counselling.
The firm represents companies in property remediation projects pursued under state clean-up programs. The firm’s attorneys have significant environmental litigation experience, including jury and bench trials and appellate practice in the state and federal courts. The firm has represented potentially responsible parties in well over 100 federal and state Superfund sites across the United States, including almost every EPA region. The firm’s Superfund work includes acting as counsel to both groups of companies and individual clients, and involves negotiating orders and agreements for remedial investigation/feasibility studies, removal actions, and remedial design/remedial actions.
Nijman Franzetti LLP serves as national environmental counsel working with clients’ in-house attorneys on day-to-day environmental issues and management of material environmental liabilities.
The firm has assisted in-house attorneys regarding permitting issues, questions concerning the applicability of federal or state environmental regulations, and responding to regulatory inquiries. Nijman Franzetti LLP regularly counsel its clients’ in-house attorneys on environmental issues that may arise in the course of any corporate transaction, including environmental disclosures, due diligence, property reports, reserves and financial assurance.
Nijman Franzetti LLP has specific experience in Clean Water Act matters, representing both industrial and municipal dischargers in the negotiation and appeal of NPDES permits, including mixing zones, whole effluent toxicity, use attainability analyses, 303(d) listing issues and other water quality and wastewater issues.
