Profile
Firm Overview:
Much Shelist, P.C. was established in 1970 as a law firm with a focus on business counseling, transactional law, and litigation. Today, Much is a firm of approximately 100 attorneys with a culture of personal service and creativity typical of a smaller firm, yet with the sophistication and resources that clients expect from the largest law firms.
Experience:
Jonathan Friedland and Jeremy Waitzman have been working together on commercial litigation finance matters since 2017 and have helped commercial litigation funding clients successfully close well over 100 transactions in that time.
The Much team has added two additional colleagues to support an increase in litigation funding matters, and they have closed numerous small deals ($10,000,000 and under) and more than a dozen deals with funding amounts in excess of $10,000,000. Their clients include both large and small funders and fundees, and they regularly work for, alongside, and opposite several members of the International Litigation Finance Association (ILFA).
The majority of their work in this continually evolving space involves helping commercial litigation funding clients prepare and negotiate transaction documents with their counterparties, which consist of plaintiffs and law firms seeking funding to pursue matters on behalf of plaintiffs. Additionally, the team has also helped commercial and consumer litigation funders navigate inside corporate matters, worked on funder-fundee disputes (both on the funder and fundee side), and helped fundees carefully evaluate risk and opportunity of funding offers from competing funders.
The transactions they have advised on have helped to fund cases in the areas of general commercial litigation (such as breach of contract, business torts, and other commercial disagreements), antitrust and competition (litigation related to anti-competitive practices, market manipulation, and other antitrust issues), asset recovery, bankruptcy and insolvency, and patent and intellectual property (claims that allege the infringement of intellectual property rights, particularly patents).
Much is proud to be part of a small group of trusted outside counsel possessing this depth of experience in the field. All of their litigation funding work to date has been generated by the partners on the team, and all of their clients have engaged their firm either by referrals from existing clients or by their own inbound inquiries.
Service:
Much's attorneys are committed to developing meaningful client relationships. By knowing their clients and their businesses, they better understand their needs and goals, and help deliver more effective solutions. Much emphasizes direct, personal communication that enables the firm to anticipate client needs and respond quickly to new developments. The result? Their clients appreciate their blend of business pragmatism and legal acumen.
