Stuart Hammer

Stuart Hammer leads Debevoise’s Environmental Practice Group. For more than two decades, he has advised private equity firms and corporations on environmental issues in mergers and acquisitions, financings, securities offerings and other transactions. He has counseled clients on the environmental risks associated with hundreds of transactions involving facilities in the United States and overseas. Mr. Hammer also advises investors on ESG issues.

Mr. Hammer is consistently ranked as a leading lawyer in environmental law. He is noted as a top-tier lawyer for the Environment: Mainly Transactional category by Chambers USA (2022), in which clients laud him for being “an amazing resource for complex environmental matters,” and where he is singled out for being “a consummate professional who brings well-rounded knowledge and sharp analytical skills to his clients.”

Mr. Hammer is a sought-after speaker on environmental and ESG matters and has written prolifically on environmental and climate change issues. Recently, he co-authored an article on the ESG agenda for fund managers and investors, which featured in Debevoise’s 2021/2022 Private Equity Year-End Review and Outlook (January 2022) and co-wrote an article on ESG regulatory changes in Europe in Debevoise’s 2021 Private Equity Midyear Review and Outlook (July 2021).
