Stephen Brett specialises in transactional IP matters. He works primarily with universities, research funders and charities (exclusively in the healthcare arena) and NHS bodies. He advises on research related agreements and as well as on commercialisation arrangements and on wider intellectual property and data protection questions. In addition, a significant minority of his clients are technology rich SMEs and he advises them on commercial and intellectual property matters.
Responding to the move towards research and commercial collaborations designed to collate data and extract value from it, Stephen has developed a further specialism in data related issues and data protection matters. His particular focus is on the use of patient data and the commercialisation of datasets.
During his career, Stephen has served as the senior in-house lawyer at Oxford University Innovation (then known as Isis Innovation), the technology transfer company of the University of Oxford. Stephen has also worked on a secondment basis with universities and a research funder and has held a fixed term appointment advising the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust on a two day a week basis. This mix of experience leaves him well placed to understand the needs and priorities of both research and commercial clients.
