Career
Ryan Pitts represents major companies in appeals across a wide range of industries and subject matters, where he brings to bear precise writing and exhaustive research on the issues of key importance. In addition to crafting compelling appellate briefing, Ryan has presented oral argument on behalf of clients before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Texas Courts of Appeals. He often assists trial teams with legal briefing and presentation of argument on decisive legal questions, as well as with preparing jury charges and post-trial motions in anticipation of appeal. For his work, Ryan has received recognition as an “Associate to Watch” for Texas Litigation: Appellate in the 2025 Chambers USA directory and a “Rising Star” in appellate litigation by Texas Super Lawyers (Thomson Reuters).
Before beginning his practice at Haynes Boone, Ryan had the privilege of clerking for United States District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal (S.D. Tex.) and United States Circuit Judge Gerald Bard Tjoflat (11th Cir.). Ryan graduated from Duke University School of Law in 2017 with a J.D. and a master’s in international and comparative law. He was a member of the editorial board of Duke Law Journal.
On top of his legal practice, Ryan regularly writes and speaks on legal issues of the day and various aspects of judicial review and appellate procedure. Ryan currently serves as a council member of the Houston Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Section and also as a director of the Austin Young Lawyers’ Association. He is a member of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, Austin Bar Association, Houston Bar Association, Texas Bar Foundation, and other legal and non-profit organizations.
