Roger Smart

Roger Smart is a senior barrister specialising in prosecuting the serious offences, in cases of national importance. He prosecutes for specialist and headquarters divisions of the CPS in terrorism, murder, kidnap, blackmail, firearms and large-scale drug operations.

Roger has experience prosecuting and defending serious and complex cases, including terrorism, homicide, kidnap, corruption, misconduct in public office, bribery, fraud, armed robbery, human trafficking, firearms offences, drugs importation & supply and money laundering. Instructed as leading counsel, he provides strategic oversight in high-profile, multi-jurisdictional inquiries many of which relate to sophisticated Organised Crime Networks.

Notable cases include Operation Venetic (early prosecutions from encrypted telephone data), Operation Ivybridge (then the UK’s largest credit card compromise), Operation Eaglewood (the Met’s largest money laundering investigation), and Operation Christmas (the UK’s highest-value diamond robbery by the “Pink Panther Gang”).

Recognised as an expert in pioneering evidential techniques, Roger was invited to address the House of Commons Select Committee on communications data legislation. He delivers national international training on terrorism, bribery, firearms, evidence gathering and the use of telecoms data.

He has undertaken projects for the United Nations, Transparency International, Financial Conduct Authority, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and other international organisations, and is instructed by the Serious Economic, Organised Crime and International Directorate, the Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division and Central Fraud Division of the Crown Prosecution Service.

A British Army Reservist for over 30 years, he also provides advice to the military on a variety of subjects and advocacy at Courts Martial.
